Christmas crochet graph from your own picture
Many Christmas crochet graphs are charts for someone else's design. If you want a chart from your own picture, such as a child's drawing, a pet in a Santa hat or a simple holiday logo, a graph maker can turn the image into a grid of colored cells. This page covers what works and what does not. It is about flat single-crochet colorwork only.
Pick images that chart well
- Bold shapes with a clear outline: a tree, star, stocking, mitten, snowman, bauble.
- Two to four colors. A red, green, white and brown palette is easy to follow.
- Simple backgrounds. A plain background gives clean edges.
Fine detail disappears on a small grid. A photo of a crowded room will become muddy, and a photo of a face needs a large grid. See how to prepare a picture before you convert.
Plan the size with your gauge
Measure a swatch, then use the size calculator. The table is a worked example at 16 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches. Your yarn will differ.
| Project idea | Target size | Chart size at that gauge |
|---|---|---|
| Small ornament panel | 3 x 3 in | 12 stitches x 15 rows |
| Gift tag or coaster | 4 x 4 in | 16 stitches x 20 rows |
| Stocking cuff panel | 6 x 6 in | 24 stitches x 30 rows |
| Pillow front panel | 12 x 12 in | 48 stitches x 60 rows |
Sizes come from simple division of the example gauge. They are estimates, not results from a finished item.
Steps
- Pick or draw a simple holiday image with high contrast.
- Swatch your yarn and record stitches and rows per 4 inches.
- Use the calculator to get the width in stitches.
- Open the graph maker, upload the image, set the width, your gauge and 3 or 4 colors.
- Paint away stray cells, then export SVG, TXT or JSON, or print the chart.
Where other Christmas graphs live
If you want a ready-made design instead, pattern sites such as Magic Yarn Pixels and Repeat Crafter Me publish Christmas graphs. They are separate sites and not affiliated with this one.
