Crochet Blanket Graph Size: How Many Stitches and Rows Do You Need?

For a picture blanket, the chart is usually bigger than the tool's 80 by 100 maximum. You can chart one panel, then repeat or join panels, or scale a design up with larger stitches.

The formula

Stitches = width in inches x stitches per 4 inches / 4

Rows = height in inches x rows per 4 inches / 4

Worked example

Suppose your swatch gives 16 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches. A 36 by 48 inch throw needs 36 x 16 / 4 = 144 stitches and 48 x 20 / 4 = 240 rows. That is larger than a single chart in this tool, so chart a 12 by 16 inch panel instead: 48 stitches by 80 rows, and make it into a 3 by 3 patchwork.

What to do

  1. Measure your own swatch; the numbers above are an example.
  2. Pick a panel size that fits within 8 to 80 stitches and 2 to 100 rows.
  3. Upload a picture, set your gauge, convert, and clean up.
  4. Print or save as SVG for each panel.
